The closing of the Sacred Paths Center leaves people grieving. All five stages are represented. Anger: “Someone must have done something wrong.” Denial: “So they’ll just have another fund raiser and open up again.” Bargaining, “What can we do to keep it open?” Depression: “There’s just something wrong with us that we can’t make this work.” And acceptance. It was a good three years, and a lot of good came from having the Sacred Paths Center. It was five years between the closing of The New Alexandria Library and the opening of the Sacred Paths Center. Each was open for over 3 years, and demonstrated that this community does want a community center. There are lessens to learn, memories to cherish, and work to continue.

With the closing of the Sacred Paths Center, several regular events are having to find new locations.

* Coffee Cauldron is still looking for a new home, but for now will be continuing at Caribou Coffee, 1127 Larpenteur Avenue West, Saint Paul, MN 55113.

* The Briar Patch American Tribal Style® belly dancing classes will continue every Wednesday with Level 1 at 6:30 and Level 2 at 7:30 at Shift Studio at 1304 University Ave NE, Minneapolis and more information at http://www.petalsthornsandhips.com/mn/ .

* The Mentoring Elders program will be meeting at various people's homes, so contact Volkhvy at volkhvy@stonedragonpress.com and include "Mentoring Elders Program" in the subject line to find the next location.

As the community is still recovering from the shock of losing the Sacred Paths Center, it was just announced that Shadow Lights Minnesota will be closing. It’s sad to lose a metaphysical shop, and in the course of one month, we’re losing two. Here’s the entire official notice about the closing of Shadow Lights Minnesota:

Dear friends,
It is with much sadness that Kim and I must make the following announcement. As many of you know, Kim has a full time job outside our store. Her job is now requiring us to move on for her to remain employed. Shadow Lights Minnesota, at least our physical location here in Prior Lake must close to facilitate this move.

This breaks our heart as it’s been our hope to provide something needed to the community and you’ve all responded with great enthusiasm. Albeit our store, since day one, has continued on the right road and has become self sustaining, it is not where we need it to be to support our whole family in our short 19 months of existence. Our little brick and mortar shoppe opened in Sept, 2010 and has slowly continued to prosper in a very tough economy and we owe all of that to you!

As our thank you to our friends and customers, Shadow Lights Minnesota will have a “Moving Sale” starting this Friday, May 11th, 2012. All items in the store will be sold. This is your chance to purchase every item in the store at 40% or more off and this includes displays, tables, shelving, etc. We will sell all merchandise at our cost. This means you'll be able to purchase all new merchandise at the wholesale price. Displays, etc will be properly depreciated and sold below cost.

Please understand we won’t sell out for less than we’ve invested in this and if you own a business and wish to purchase items “wholesale” bring in your tax EIN, etc. and we’ll accommodate you for sales tax purposes. Kim will continue to make candles and they will continue to be available on our website after the store closes. Keys of Paradiseis sponsoring another Holistic Market Day next Saturday from 10am-3pm with many local artisans displaying their wares at 713 Minnehaha Ave, Saint Paul, MN. Last month was very nice inside, but this month should be much more open and fun as they move outside.

Word has it that the Park Service has ruled that the significant attributes of Coldwater Spring (one of our areas most sacred sites) are manmade and that the history of the area began in 1820, ignoring the 9000 years of native artifacts. Read more about this at http://www.friendsofcoldwater.org/

The Steampunk Tarot release party at the Eye of Horus was astoundingly well attended. Thank you Barbara Moore for creating this wonderful new tarot deck.

A new class was just posted, and is open to the first ten people to register. It’s called Awakening into Wonder: A Seidth Adventure, and will be held Saturday, May 26, 9am-9pm. The workshop will explore the reemerging forms of oracular seidth/seidr work using voice, movement and conscious choice. Participants will shimmy and shake, singing galdrar of invitation and charm, to sweetly draw the Mysterious Ones. Participants will explore the ways of the seidkona and seidmadr sitting on the High Seat, and will begin to learn the ways of Pagan prophecy rooted in bipartite time. Next Sunday is the huge May Day celebration in Powderhorn Park. There is nothing else on the calendar for that day. Really, what could possibly compete with the Heart of the Beast May Day celebration? There’s a huge parade which is scheduled to start at 1pm, but will most likely start later. There’s a pageant across the lake, to the stage. There are vendors and booths galore. It is the return of summer to our land.

Traditionally, Paganism was always the religion of the place it is practiced. With that in mind, the May 6th May Day celebration at Powderhorn Park is a huge part of how our community celebrates this festival on the wheel of the year. Hopefully you’ll be able to make it.

There’s a mixer for Heathen Men & Wiccan Women at Merlin's Rest Monday May 7 at 7pm. Yes this event does have heteronormative love-connection overtones, but for many years heterosexual Wiccan women have had a difficult time finding spiritually like-minded heterosexual men. Also, the Pagan movement is very Wiccan-centric, so it’s important for Wiccans to mix with people of other paths to remember that this movement can accommodate many views.

Many Heathens are looking at modern Paganism and finding that it does not reflect who they are, and they are declaring that they are not Pagan. Historically, there are few people who have more claim to the Pagan label then Heathens, so losing them is significant. The Pagan movement is large enough to accommodate many different religions.

The character of the local Pagan community should be able to accommodate the Heathen community. We are the Northern folk. We are people of ice and water. Heathens should have a place in this Pagan community, and if they don’t feel like they do, then maybe more effort needs to be made to make sure that they do.

So hopefully next Monday’s mixer will be well attended, and hopefully there will be many more events which attempt to integrate Heathens and other Pagans. The loss of the Heathens could be the single greatest schism taking place in the Pagan community.

I've heard it said that locally Heathen men outnumber Heathen women two to one. I've also heard that Wiccan women outnumber Wiccan men two to one. There should be a mixer. With a hearty sigh of relief, it would appear that the Northern Dawn Local Council of the Covenent of the Goddess will continue. There was a meeting Saturday to discuss its future, and there was definite community support and planning for its future. Northern Dawn CoG has been holding public celebrations since it’s founding, Samhain of 1982, and has hosted the CoG national gathering (Merrymeet) twice. It’s good to know that it will continue.

The Future of Northern Dawn Local Council (CoG) will be discussed at a Town Hall meeting at Walker Community United Methodist Church this Saturday at 6pm. Local Tarot professional extraordinaire, Barbara Moore recently published another new Tarot Deck, the Steam Punk Tarot. If you’ve talked with Barbara in the last two years, then you know what a passion this deck has been to create. She will be having a book signing this Saturday at Magus Books & Herbs, and a launch party extravaganza May 5th at the Eye of Horus.

Highway cleanup went very well yesterday. Many hands made light work and mother Earth is a little less littered. Thank you to the Upper Midwest Pagan Alliance for allowing our community the opportunity to perform such a fulfilling service.

The Upper Midwest Pagan Alliance adopted a stretch of highway in 2008. Twice a year, local Pagans (like you) gather to pick up litter and beautify a piece of the Earth. Our stretch of highway is about 2 miles of I-35E a few miles before it rejoins I-35W in the north

It’s difficult to describe the highway cleanup and convey how enjoyable it was. There was a playfulness to the outing. The sense of discovery at the bizarre things to be found. The challenge of getting that half buried tire to the side of the road. The joy of time spent with wonderful people.

Saturday was not the warmest day we’ve had lately. The clouds threatened rain and provided a mist. This turned out to be the perfect weather for cleaning up the highway. We weren’t too warm. We didn’t get sunburns. The bugs weren’t biting.

Our stretch of highway is being redone, so right now there’s only one side open, which means we only had to clean one side of the interstate. The side we were cleaning had been recently landscaped, so there wasn’t a lot of litter.

We split into two teams to start at either end and meet in the middle. One team walked down the off-ramp to start their clean-up. The other was dropped off down the road where we had to climb over a fence capped with barbed wire to get to the highway. Although this sounds unpleasant, it turned into a playful team-build as the obstacle was overcome.

After about an hour and a half, it began to rain. It wasn’t cold, and the rain was somewhat refreshing. If it hadn’t been for regulations requiring that we not cleanup in the rain, we would have continued. The two teams were close enough to be able to see each other at that point, with not a lot of litter in between.

This spring’s highway cleanup project was very enjoyable. I hope to see many of you this fall as we clean-up our stretch of highway again.

UMPA Spring Hiway Cleanup is April 7. This is one of those events which makes me proud to be in Paganistan. The Upper Midwest Pagan Alliance adopted a stretch of highway in 2008. Twice a year, local Pagans (like you) gather to pick up litter and beautify a piece of the Earth. Best of all, there’s a big sign saying that this stretch of highway is adopted by Pagans, which is supremely cool, and unique. Paganicon was wonderful, and attendance was way up from last year. The guests were delightful. The workshops were moving and life changing. The Ball was hopping. Sacred Harvest Festival (August 6-12) registration is now open. http://harmonytribe.org/sacred-harvest-festival-2012-registration. On a personal note, Sacred Harvest Fest is the reason I moved to Paganistan. I had attended Pagan festivals throughout the nation, and found most of them to be big Pagan themed parties. Sacred Harvest Fest was different. It was more spiritual, more family friendly, and more community focused. It opened my eyes to what a Pagan festival could be, and to what a Pagan community could be. I realized that I wanted to be a part of the spiritual community that created Sacred Harvest Fest. This festival is deeply significant to me, and so in the coming months will probably get many mentions in this newsletter.

It’s only two weeks to Paganicon. The Pagan community is maturing, and Conferences are becoming increasingly popular. One of the exciting features of this year’s Paganicon is the Saturday night Paganicon Ball; http://tcpaganpride.org/paganicon/ball . This is the one part of Paganicon which is also open to non-registrants. People do enjoy celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, so instead of celebrating the guy who drove out the snakes, come celebrate with the snakes. This Thursday is the deadline to get the $65 rate for Paganicon. After that it goes up to $80. Also, they’ll be sending in the badge requests, so registering before Thursday gets you a nicely printed badge which will look fabulous, but after Thursday you will get a badge created with a sharpie which will announce to the world that you were late in registering. February 26, 2009, Paganistani Promotions expanded to Facebook. At the time, it was done as a way to encourage people to join the Twin Cities Pagans Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TwinCitiesPagans with the most complete Pagan community calendar in the nation. The Yahoo group has continued to grow, now having 633 members, making it the 9th largest community based Pagan Yahoo group in the world. All of the other 8 experienced their growth before Facebook became popular, and (like most Yahoo groups) have leveled off since then. While other Yahoo groups have been declining or maintaining, ours has continued to grow.

There was a really good article in the PNC this week about a local student who was supported by her school when she wore a pentacle necklace. A substitute teacher told her to tuck it in, and the substitute was immediately reprimanded. It’s so nice to see when the system actually works. There’s going to be a new metaphysical store in Brainerd, MN. Ancestral Paths, is targeted to open on March 1st, 2012, at 207 South 7th st. Brainerd, MN. It’s a bit outside the Twin Cities, but we definitely wish them well.

About eight years ago I created a thing called the Pagan Daily Calendar, which attempted to find the Pagan celebrations linked with different days, because every day there is cause for celebration. This required researching the holidays to find out how they were practiced. I would find a description of a tradition, but then further research would reveal that it was only practiced that way in one particular village. Eventually it became clear that Paganism is really about the practices of communities. To understand Pagans, you have to understand the communities in which they practice. Every day, this community has wonderful ways in which it celebrates its Paganism. This is a great community for Pagans.

This newsletter usually looks ahead to upcoming events. This week we’re looking back at the year that was 2011 in Paganistan.

Despite some challenges, groups forged ahead, festivals persisted, and there were no reports of any local Pagan groups or businesses ending. In fact, there were several bright points and lots of growth. Here are several that stand out:

We had the first Paganicon, our very own Pagan conference. By all reports, it was highly successful and is poised to be highly successful again. http://tcpaganpride.org/paganicon/

With a change of leadership, Sacred Harvest Fest dedicated itself to healing and personal growth. http://harmonytribe.org/

The Twin Cities Pagan Pride event was astounding at their new outdoor location near one of this community’s sacred sites. http://tcpaganpride.org/paganpride/

Keys of Paradise opened its own location. Their products are now carried in more stores, they have implemented drop shipping of many products, they have greatly expanded their merchandise lines, and they generally had a great year. http://www.keysofparadise.com/

Eye of Horus launched the world’s largest Pagan eBook store and the first eBook store of its kind. http://eyeofhorusbooks.com/ They also used their new location to bring in many nationally known speakers. http://eyeofhorus.biz/

Northern Dawn CoG continued to produce astounding rituals.

Local Pagan, Nels Linde, made it onto an impressive list of influential Pagans, which you can read about at: http://paganinparadise.blogspot.com/2011/12/walking-talk-10-pagans-who-made.html

There are dinner parties with primarily Pagan guest lists. There are birthday celebrations where most of the attendees are Pagan. People are calling each other, chatting, emailing, and generally being friends. The local Pagan community is as strong as ever. Possibly stronger because all of this continued despite the lack of any big Pagan emergencies to rally around.

2009&10 saw lots of big growth with the opening of new businesses and reorganization of established organizations. 2011 saw them all doing the work once the hype was gone. It wasn’t glamorous or entertaining but the work continued. What we saw was that they did the work well and established themselves for a very good 2012.

Next Saturday, the Eye of the Boar coven will be holding a free energy-healing clinic at the Eye of Horus. The coven has a bunch of reiki masters and practitioners of other healing modalities, and they like to get together and practice. This is their way of having fun. So if you feel like you need some reiki, show up at the Eye of Horus after 7pm. It’s free.

The library of the recently dissolved Temple of the River is now available to the winner of an essay contest. There are a couple events this week at Magus Books & Herbs being taught by their amazing herbalist Liz Johnson. The first is a class Tuesday night on digestion, and the next is Wednesday and begins a three year exploration of herbs. This is one of the most in depth herb classes available in the Twin Cities. If you have a chance, this is an opportunity to learn from an expert.

Many of you remember John Michael Greer from Paganicon last year. By all accounts, he was the best guest we could have ever hoped for, and people genuinely loved him.
